Matte Box Distortion Filter
Matte Box Distortion Filter
SUBTLE IMPERFECTIONS. DISTINCTIVE CHARACTER.
Built around a unique partial matte box format, it uses selectively placed refractive elements to introduce in-camera depth, subtle distortion, and edge illumination without overwhelming the image. Visual reverb and echoes.
Integrated notches along the frame allow nylon filament to be wrapped for custom flare and streak effects, adding another layer of control and creativity.
Designed for fast, intuitive adjustments on set, it lets you precisely shape light and texture, bringing character to the negative space for a more dynamic, cinematic result. A never-before-seen filter design, developed and tested on set during major studio film and television productions.
Enhance your images with subtle, distinctive optical effects that add depth and visual interest.
Well-suited for a wide range of applications, including music videos, wedding & engagement photography, and narrative filmmaking.
Allows for precise control over both the intensity and placement of the effect within the frame.
Visual Echoes: Reflects & refracts elements from the surrounding environment, creating layered, immersive visuals.
Our current iteration of the Matte Box distortion filter helps energize the image's outer edges and gently break up the empty look-space, resulting in a more dynamic and immersive visual experience.
Since our beginnings, we’ve offered a range of visual distortion filters across various mounting methods: screw-on, handheld, and matte box configurations, including partial matte box solutions.
Originally developed in 2011, these filters were inspired by the work of Bruno Avellian and Philippe Le Sourd. During the design process, we even reached out to both artists to geek chat about their methods.
In recent years, we’ve had the opportunity to further refine and test these filters on professional productions, including use on the sets of the various Star Wars series shows and the upcoming feature film The Mandalorian & Grogu.
These filters introduce additional in-camera dimension and atmospheric depth, bringing subtle movement and texture to the frame.
Dimensions: 101mm x 39mm for use with 4x4 and 4x5.65 Matte Boxes. Adjustable partial matte box design allows the filter to be repositioned within the matte box for precise placement and creative control.
Designed and constructed in Southern California, USA, from Lightweight Acrylic and other elements.
